I think what is weirder than Selena being a side character in her own titular series is all the shoehorned product placement. What’s up with the weird product placements? Selena: the series is also not exempt from large corporate partnerships. Simultaneously partnering with big corporations like Forever21 and MAC cosmetics. The Quintanillas have not only been suing Selena’s widow, they have been known to threaten lawsuits to small Latinx creators for making anything remotely related to Selena. Even using litigation to stifle Perez’s own tv deal shortly before this Netflix series. The family is constantly at odds with Perez telling his love story with Selena. In a lawsuit between the Quintanillas and Perez, it was revealed that a distraught Perez signed much of his IP rights to the family without a lawyer present. After the singer’s death in 1995, the family quickly lawyered up to ensure they had full rights over her music and likeness, even over her husband Chris Perez. The Quintanillas have been famously protective (and at times predatory) with Selena’s image. Those defending the casting choice often refer that the family is heavily involved in the Netflix series, but the Quintanillas and the fans have not always been eye to eye.Ī lot of Selena fans don’t f*ck with the Quintanillas At the time, there were protests against the Puerto Rican actress playing an iconic Mexican-American. Many fans are upset that the actor chosen is not fully of Mexican descent, which is not unsimilar to the backlash of JLo’s casting in the 1997 film. One of the reasons Selena is so admired was because she had non-European features compared to her counterparts. Serratos is of Italian and Mexican ancestry which has led many fans to claim the series is “white washing” the beloved singer. It wouldn’t be a proper review without mentioning the backlash of the Serratos casting. But performance isn’t the only thing we can be critical of… I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt that possibly in the second season we can see the reason why she got casted. With the script she was given and the smallest amount of screen time ever, there wasn’t really a lot to work with. Now the question, was Christian Serratos the best actor for role? And I’m going to give her a bit of slack. For example, I really don’t think Will Smith resembled Muhammad Ali that much but he was the best actor for the role. In my opinion, as long as an actor ✨ kinda ✨ looks like the real person I think it’s permissible as long as they are a good actor. Just search “Selena the Series casting” on Twitter and you will see the disappointment in fans. I think I was probably the least critical about the casting compared to other people. Lifetime could have done a better job with the composition and the scenes are in desperate need of a color balance.Ĭhristian Serratos doesn’t look like Selena (and that’s okay) I really could have endured this snoozefest longer if it was visually compelling. If the storyline is good enough, I could care less if it looks like its shot on a freaking Nokia. I am not normally a stickler for a pretty television show. The lack of drama makes the poor cinematography even more of an eyesore. This, after all, is entertainment and should be entertaining. These characters are based off real people and I am definitely not a Selena historian, but zero conflict makes for an incredibly boring watch. Suzette is really the only female character that does get to show some emotion, but it's only to reel in Selena when her relationship with Chris becomes apparent. The most we get from her is being mildly annoyed that AB wants to play music or refuses to change diapers (he does eventually but c'mon bare minimum people). When AB gets his girlfriend pregnant, she never once voices a serious concern about him going on the road as a musician and interfering with raising their child. Most of the women in this show are written as docile and hyper supportive of the male characters aspirations. She only gets frustrated or asserts any sort of will of her own when insisting Selena should rest or pushing for security for Selena. So you’re telling me that after losing their restaurant, Abraham buys not 1 but 3 houses at the same time without consulting his wife and Marcella was just cool with it? Marcella during the entire show never gets upset or angry, she just politely smiles and supports all of Abraham’s plans and tirades. I thought we needed conflict to have like a story
